Game(s) Notes
Vinnie Pasquantino launched a missile out of Surprise Stadium in his first at bat of the season1 . He also had a hard hit single and a walk before calling it a day and Logan Porter came in for him at first.
One major emphasis we’ve heard coming out of camp so far has been about the influence of the new analytical driven pitching development system spear headed by former Cleveland Guardians bullpen coach turned 1st time pitching coach Brian Sweeney. The word on the street is the pitching department is putting a big influence on strike throwing. Which is very good considering since 2018 the pitching has ranked 27th in BB% 2 . So all this too say that the pitching was probably the number #1 things that fans wanted to see improvement on this spring training. And so far the pitching has showed out. Only walking 12 batters in 36 innings.
Tucker Bradley and Matt Duffy are sharing a number in spring training this year. Which seemed to spark confusion on which one of them hit the walk off home run to end Fridays game VS the Texas Rangers. lol its spring training for the media as well
Tyler Tolbert was once a roughly unknown to a large portion of just general Royals fans but, after his breakout performance during Saturdays game. Tolbert put his name on the radar of everyone in Kansas City. Tyler Tolbert came on in due to the injury of Diego Hernandez and hit a gigantic three run home run and made a sparkling defensive catch in center.
Franmil Reyes swing looked like it might be back as he obliterated a ball into outer space during Sundays contest. He also looks relatively slimmer and more in shape like he did in 2021.
After a off season of confusion in regards to if the Royals and Zach Greinke would come to a agreement on a contract for the 2023 season. Kansas City Royals fans were so happy when the two sides finally did. So far we are only two innings into Grienke’s 20th season and second back with the Royals but, so far it looks like he still has his stuff and started off his spring with two scoreless frames with 1 hit allowed,1 strikeout, and 1 walk3.
Jon Heasley and Jackson Kowar are two pitchers with a lot too prove this Spring. They were both high draft picks in the 2018 MLB Draft and have both been in the majors for almost two seasons now but, they just haven’t found hardly any success so far. And heading into this season it is a big question as if they will even make the rotation or even the big league bullpen. Heasley pitched on Sunday against Seattle and went 2 innings allowed 5 hits and 4 runs all of which were earned and walked 1 and struck out 1 and gave up a homer. Jackson came into a tie ball game against Millwaukee and ended up giving up 3 hits and 3 runs all of which were earned 2 strike outs 0 walks and 1 homer allowed and got the loss. So far both Kowar and Heasley took steps back towards making the big league rotation. But there is still a long spring ahead.
The Pitch Clock is definitely shortening games. While we were only able to physically see the pitch clock in action for one of the four games because, the other three were on radio . It was clear that the pace has definitely picked up causing the games to end a good 20-30 minutes earlier. Which is a pretty big W. If you ask me because in past games were definitely 3 hours plus pre-game and-post game plus other stoppages in play. Probably push games 4-5 hours and that’s not including some games go to extra innings and people have to drive to and from the stadium. So because of that I would say shaving 20-30 minutes off games is very helpful. And pretty soon by Opening Day the pitch clock will feel normal and we won’t even be bothered by it anymore.
Well unless this happens to your favorite team when they are batting with the bases loaded…I could see why you’d hate the pitch clock then
Which just so happened to be in the first inning of the first game also. Lot of firsts huh
Thanks Cal Eldred
That is a lot of ones
